Working on a complex post-industrial site in Pune, India, we sought to embrace the area's heritage and bring disparate elements together.

We centred our solution on three ideas:

• Bio-diversity spine

• Vibrant retail streets

• Infrastructure

Key design principles:

• A species-rich, bio-diversity 'spine', creating an environment for nature to thrive.

• Pedestrian walkways sitting adjacent to the retail zone and crossing the 'spine' at strategic locations to enhance the pedestrian experience.

• Use of railway infrastructure iconography along the walkways to reflect the site's heritage.

• Recognition of the new green area as a key element of local stormwater management.
